If you’ve never been to a quilting retreat before, let me just say this right up front: you are about to have SO much fun.
A retreat is part sewing marathon, part sleepover, part show-and-tell, and part therapy session—with fabric.
If you’re feeling excited and a little nervous, totally normal. Let’s walk through what to expect, what to pack, and how to make the most of your first retreat.
What is a Quilting Retreat, Really?
Think of a retreat as several uninterrupted days of sewing, surrounded by people who get it. No cooking meals (usually), no laundry, no guilt for sewing all day. Just you, your projects, and a room full of quilters cheering each other on.
Some retreats are structured with classes.
Others are totally open sewing.
Most are a mix of both—with lots of laughing in between.

What to Expect When You Get There
✨ A sewing space already buzzing with energy
✨ Tables, irons, cutting stations, and extension cords everywhere
✨ People introducing themselves by their quilts (not their jobs!)
✨ Instant friendships over fabric choices
Don’t worry if you come alone—many people do. By the end of day one, you’ll feel like you’ve known everyone forever.
What to Bring (Without Overpacking!)
Here’s the key: bring enough, but not everything you own. My clothes bag is the smallest bag I take.

Sewing Essentials
Sewing machine (cleaned and tested!)
Power cord + foot pedal
Basic feet you use most
Thread (neutral colors + project colors)
Rotary cutter, extra blades
Ruler(s) you love
Cutting mat (if listed as needed)
Seam ripper (because… it happens)
Pins or clips
Scissors
Bright light
Chair cushion
Extension cord & power strip
Small trash bag or thread catcher
Projects
1–2 main projects (not 12!) cut out
Pre-cut fabric if possible
Patterns printed and organized
A small “backup” project (just in case)
Food, Snacks & Drinks (VERY Important Section)
Most retreats include meals—but snacks are sacred.
Snack Ideas That Work Great:
Trail mix or nuts
Granola bars or protein bars
Chocolate (non-negotiable)
Crackers or pretzels
Individually wrapped treats
Nuts
Drinks
Refillable water bottle
Coffee mug with a lid
Tea, flavored drink packets, or soda
Tip: Late-night sewing = snack time. Plan accordingly.
Wine is always a late night go to.
Clothes & Comfort Items
Retreat fashion is comfort chic.
Sweat Pants
Comfy clothes (layers!)
Sneakers or supportive shoes
Light sweater or hoodie
Pajamas
Earbuds or headphones
Phone charger
Retreat Etiquette (Easy Stuff!)
Respect quiet hours
Ask before touching someone else’s quilt
Share irons & cutting space kindly
Celebrate everyone’s progress—big or small
Don’t apologize for sewing all day (that’s the point!)
Don't watch videos with the speaker on. Use your ear buds.

What You’ll Take Home (Besides Quilts)
💜 New skills
💜 New friends
💜 Motivation you didn’t know you were missing
💜 A reminder of why you fell in love with quilting
And yes—probably a few unfinished projects. That’s totally normal.
Final Pep Talk
If you’re on the fence, go.
If you’re nervous, go anyway.
Your first quilting retreat might just become your favorite quilting memory—and something you look forward to every year.
And trust me… once you go to one, you’ll be counting down to the next. ✨🧵

Great job again Shelia!
