Square Up Your Blocks Now...Your Future Self Will Thank You

If your quilt blocks are square and consistent as you sew them, your quilt will practically piece itself together later. Seriously. This is one of those behind-the-scenes steps that doesn’t feel exciting in the moment—but it makes everything smoother, flatter, and way less frustrating down the road.
Let’s talk about a few simple habits that will keep your blocks looking crisp and professional from the very beginning.
Square as You Go
As you finish each block, take a minute to measure it. If your unfinished block is supposed to measure 12½" square, make sure every single one does.
If a block is a little big, trim it down to size.
Don’t assume it will “work itself out” later—it won’t 😄
When all your blocks are the same size, sewing them into rows is easy, accurate, and stress-free.

Match Your Thread to Your Fabric
Thread choice matters more than most quilters realize.
Sewing dark fabrics? Use a matching dark thread.
Sewing white or light fabrics? Stick with white or very light thread.
White thread on dark fabric can show, and you want your stitches to be as invisible as possible. The goal is for the fabric to shine—not the thread.
Watch for Dark Threads with Light Fabric
When piecing dark and light fabrics together, stray dark threads in the seam allowance can shadow through the lighter fabric once the quilt is finished and quilted.
A few extra seconds here make a big difference:
Trim all loose threads as you go
You can even trim the seam allowance of the darker fabric just a bit so it hides under the lighter seam allowance
It’s a small detail that keeps your quilt looking clean and polished.
Press—Don’t Iron
This one is big. Press your blocks, don’t iron them.
Lift the iron up
Place it down
Lift again
If you slide the iron back and forth like you’re ironing a shirt, you’ll stretch and distort your blocks—and there goes all that careful measuring. Pressing keeps everything square and stable.
A Fun ( and cheap) Storage Tip
Want a great way to keep your blocks flat, clean, and organized?
Ask your local pizza shop for an empty pizza box 🍕
It’s the perfect size for pressed and trimmed quilt blocks and keeps them protected until you’re ready to sew them into rows.
Taking the time to square, trim, press, and clean up your blocks as you go makes quilting so much more enjoyable. A little patience now means fewer headaches later—and a quilt that comes together beautifully.
