Quilt Label Instructions

Do you label your quilts and wall hangings? I try to label all but sometimes there are a few that slip by without a label. The information I usually include on the label is: name of quilt, who made it, who quilted it, and the date it was completed.

The way I used to make my labels was to iron my piece of fabric onto freezer paper to stabilize it. Then I would draw straight lines on the paper side of the freezer paper. Then holding it up to a window or using a light, I would hand print using a Pigma Permanent Pen onto the fabric using the lines to help the printing to stay straight. Pressing with an iron to heat sets the ink. This technique works well if you don't have an embroidery machine. Now I use my embroidery machine and embroider my labels.

This is how I make the label after the embroidery or hand printing is finished.

I use iron-on stabilizer on the fabric to be embroidered, or after I hand write, I peel off the freezer paper and iron on a stabilizer. Cut the stabilized fabric 1 ¼ " measured from the top, bottom, and sides of the letters. Next, cut strips of fabric 1" wide and longer than the sides. Sew the 2 strips to the longest sides.

Trim those to the exact length of the stabilized fabric. Press with the right sides up. Take the next 2 strips and sew to the sides. Trim off excess to even up the sides. Press with the right sides up. Working from the reverse side, press the raw edges to the back.

The fold should be against the seam allowance. Using a glue paddle, apply Fabric Fusion glue to the raw edge of the fabric.

You don't want the glue by the crease because it would be hard to get your needle through while sewing it onto the quilt.

Press and glue all raw edges to the back. You can speed the glue drying time by ironing it. This makes a nice framed label.

Now that the label is finished you should attach it to the bottom left corner of the quilt back. If it is an art quilt or wall lhanging, I use Fabric Fusion Glue and glue it to the piece. If it's for a quilt, I glue it to the quilt using a basting glue like Roxanne's or Appli-Glue, then I hand sew it.

I hope this helps you with how to label your quilts.
